Start-Up Med Tech Company
Challenge
A start-up medical technology company was seeking a change of direction as it was struggling to move from a long history of successful clinical trials onto a more commercial footing.
Appraoch
John was selected to take over as the executive chairman on the Board. He made one or two changes on the board, persuaded the many shareholders to make some revisions simplifying the cap table, and re-wrote the commercial and market entry strategies for the company before initiating engagement with potential funders.
Outcome
The company was left with a revitalised strategy with a clear focus in terms of both disease area and market entry, a cleaner cap table and revitalised board. It has raised one bridging round and is now actively seeking external funding to take it forward from seed to series A round. John was awarded the SME visionary leader of 2026 award for his work on this.
London NHS Diagnostic and Treatment Centre
Challenge
Two leading and internationally famous London NHS Trusts were seeking to work together to bring about a transfoemd approach to consolidated diagnostics and treatment designed around patients, with the aim of dramatically tackling waiting lists in their part of London and reducing the load on hard-pressed hospitals.
Appraoch
John was selected to act as SRO for the programme working across both trusts within the same ICB. John assembled a programme team from scratch, used a digital twin approach to designing the solution, designed a programme with leadership found across both organisations, put a compliant governance regime in place and engaged across both the NHS at regional and sub-regional levels and with industry to gain support fro industry for delivery within a novel managed service contract arrangement.
Outcome
A feasibility study was undertaken, clinical and industrial engagement was firmly established, with a working programme and developed strategic outline case that is with the NHS region for consideration, with interest in the idea being developed into a pan-London approach.
Digital Command Centres in Healthcare
Challenge
Modern hospitals and health systems have oceans of information, hundreds of information systems, scores of flow managers – and yet have significant bottlenecks and delays in patient flow both within and beyond the hospital, significantly impacting standards of care and hospital finances.
Appraoch
John has on numerous occasions been commissioned to advise on the possibility of deploying a NASA-like command and control system atop the hospital’s existing infrastructure. John has worked on such systems in both military and healthcare domains and is well-placed to advise on the advantages and challenges of applying such a change programme in the healthcare domain.
Outcome
Hospital leaders are advised to consider undertaking this change only when they have an appropriate degree of digital maturity and openness to change – the latter requiring significant leadership capability ay numerous levels in the organisation. Where such systems are deployed, the resulting improvements in flow typically yield a 10-15% increase in flow and productivity, and (depending on how the hospital or system is remunerated.
